Cengage Takes 117,000 SF at Boston’s Pier 4 Development

Education and Tech Company Relocating HQ in Fall 2018 to Tishman Speyer’s Seaport Project

Cengage, the largest U.S.-based provider of teaching and learning materials for higher education, signed a lease to relocate its headquarters this fall to Tishman Speyer’s Pier 4 development in Boston’s Seaport.

The global education and tech company inked a 10-year deal for 117,000 square feet at 140 Northern Ave., a 13-story, 370,000-square-foot office building on track to deliver this summer. Cengage will occupy the second through sixth floors, joining Boston Consulting Group, which signed a 202,000-square-foot anchor lease in the building in June 2016.

Cengage has experienced significant growth since moving its headquarters to the Channel Center in Boston three years ago, said CTO George Moore, necessitating the move. The company will shift all 500 Boston employees to its new location and is currently looking to fill another 100 positions.

Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects to LEED Gold specifications, the Pier 4 office building will feature a fitness center, bike storage and three levels of parking.
The Pier 4 development will also feature a nine-story multifamily complex designed by SHoP Architects and CBT.

Brooks Brown of Tishman Speyer negotiated the Cengage lease on behalf of the owner.
